Position:  6th grade language arts and reading

Education:  B.A. Education, Fort Lewis College,

M.A. Education: Curriculum and Instruction, Boise State University

Bio: My teaching career spans 19 years, three states, and two subject areas.  My love of the environment drew me to science and education in college, and I began my first job teaching middle school life science. After completing my graduate degree with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction, my passion for reading and writing led me to language arts.

Encouraging students to think critically, write creatively, and express themselves in spoken word enlivens my days.  I thrive on the energy and enthusiasm our middle school students bring to Powell. Their insights, perspectives, and smiles brighten my day.

“Inspired” writers abound in my classroom. Being the recipient of two technology grants this last year allowed me to merge technology, language arts skills, and student assessment.  Wireless laptops, Smartboard, document cameras, Senteo clicker response system, and a remote writing slate allow students to access, analyze, and utilize the wealth of information at their fingertips, preparing them for 21st Century communication.

In our spare time, my family shares my love of nature and together we enjoy hiking, biking, skiing, and organic gardening.  If we are not reading, writing, or listening to the latest music around the house, we are outside soaking up the crisp Colorado air.

Position:  Sixth Grade Science and Reading

Education:  Bachelor of Arts – University of Virginia – Psychology
Master of Arts – University of Colorado at Denver – Curriculum and Instruction
More than 60 hours of post-graduate coursework in science, technology, and educational leadership

Bio:  I am a native of Columbus, Ohio.  Both of my parents continue to work as professional educators in the Columbus area.  My mother is a preschool P.E. teacher and my father is an ever-committed, retired professor of nuclear engineering at The Ohio State University.  I left Ohio for Virginia after graduating from high school and came on out to Colorado after graduating from college.   I have a real zest for adventure.  To that end, I have held a variety of odd jobs over the years - from slinging fish at a fishery in Petersburg, Alaska to guiding rafts down the rapids in Dinosaur National Monument out of Jensen, Utah.  I spend two years of my life overseas as a volunteer in the U.S. Peace Corps where I taught English in a tiny village on a tiny coral atoll in the tiny Pacific island nation of Kiribati.  Always a lover of travel, I have traveled to numerous countries throughout the world including Vietnam, Russia, New Zealand, and Nicaragua.  Recently, I married my best friend and biggest fan, Mike, who is a high school guidance counselor in the Denver area.  I have been lucky enough to call my Powell classroom my second home for the past 6 years.  Science has always been my very favorite subject.  It thrills me to be able to share my enthusiasm for science every day with the students in my classes.

 M.A. (Special Education), Northern Colorado University, 1980
 More than 60 additional post-graduate credit hours

Bio:  I have taught for more than 30 years.  The first part of my career was spent as a Special Education Teacher at the elementary, middle school and high school levels.  I have been at Powell for the past 23 years, first as a Special Education Teacher, and as a 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher for the past 9 years.  I have been Chairman of Powell’s Social Studies Department for the past 6 years.  My years at Powell have been the most enjoyable years of my career.  Our team teaching approach is very effective, and I am constantly amazed by our students.  My husband, Roy (an attorney), and I were both born and reared in Michigan, but we’ve made Colorado our home since 1976.  We have 5 children:  Jake (an attorney), Paden (a pediatrician), Hannah (an attorney), Caitlyn (a law student), and Gibson (a senior at Kent Denver School).  We also have two precocious grand children, with a third expected in January.
