The Powell Jazz Band is a beginning/intermediate level jazz band in the "big band" style.  There is a rhythm section consisting of piano, guitar, bass and drumset, as well as a horn section consisting of alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trumpet and trombone.

The Powell Jazz Band does focus on playing jazz music, however, they do play songs that are blues, latin, rock, funk, sould and other similar genres.  Many times musicians in the jazz band are playing a 2nd instrument (like a clarinet player who plays tenor sax) because we encourage students to be in jazz band if they're interesteed in playing music without reading the music.  That is, they begin to learn to play be ear and make up their own melodies, particularly the jazz version of soloing of soloing referred to as "improvisation".

Rehersals are every Thursday in the band room (Room 323) from 3:00p.m. - 4:00p.m. and we have about 5 performances a year.  The Powell Jazz Band is our "gig band" meaning if there's an event not at Powell Middle School, it's likely to be our jazz band that goes and does the performance.  Form more information, contact Mr. Talley.
